Progress Report – February 2014

Outreach Zanzibar

Dear Friends,

2013 was a fantastic year for Outreach Zanzibar and Zanzibar Help Foundation. With the school project now complete, the dental clinic relocated to a new bigger location, the opening of an eye clinic and recognition from the President of Zanzibar, we have achieved tremendous success. All of this would not have been possible without your generous donations and continued support. We now wish to update you  our progress.

The School Project

In 2013, all of the objectives set out have been achieved:

  1. Completed Phase 2 and 3 construction
  2. Built a computer centre and conduct computer classes;
  3. Recruited qualified local and foreign teachers to train our teachers
  4. Expanded our library and secured more teaching aids.

Recruiting long term experienced school teachers from overseas to train the current school teachers continues to be a major challenge for us. We have approached a number of potential sources and organizations but we have yet to solve this issue.

Phase 2 Before and After:

This was originally 3 classrooms. It was rebuilt into 6 classrooms, plus a Headmaster’s office and a secure storage facility.

Phase 3 Before and After:

Old school before construction was a dilapidated school shed of 4 classrooms with leaky roofs, holes in the floors, poor black boards and broken furniture. There was no electricity in the classrooms.

The shed was rebuilt into 5 classrooms, complete with electricity, a full computer center for teachers, students and villagers. A British IT teacher conducts 2 classes  week in the computer center. Prior to this we have volunteer teachers from Scotland who have now departed after months with us.

Book Buddy Program:

My Book Buddy Library in the Classroom

My Book Buddy Project was sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Amersfoot, Holland, Brighton & Hove Soiree Rotary Clubs, Rotary Club of Rouen, France and Rotary Club of Salerno, Italy.

The school children were supplied with weather resistant satchels for the books and they are now encouraged to borrow at least one book per week to read at home.

A portable My Book Buddy library resides in each classroom.

Dental and Eye Care Clinic

The New Dental Clinic

The first Dental Clinic was a self constructed facility started from a “hole in the wall”. In 2013, the clinic was relocated to a bigger and better facility to accommodate the ever increasing flow of patients.

In addition  an Eye Clinic was also started. Regular outreach programs  are conducted to the remote villages to treat patients who cannot afford the bus fare to attend the clinics.

In December 2013, Outreach Zanzibar treated 263 orphans at the dental clinic over a period of 3 days. This project was conceptualised by a 15 year old high school student named ALI JIVRAJ, who mobilized the orphans and approached Outreach Zanzibar and other dentists to assist in the project.
